For decades, chiropractors have recognised the importance of subluxation not only in postural aesthetics (how people appear or move), but also in how the spine and nervous system function. While chiropractic care has long been linked to improvements in musculoskeletal pain, such as headaches, chiropractic research and case report data are now beginning to indicate that adjusting the subluxation may impact areas like cognition, energy, and overall human performance.
It is well established that chiropractic care can help headache sufferers, and that forward head posture (thoracic kyphosis) is a contributing factor. What is less prolifically documented, however, is how subluxation, particularly in the cervical spine, may influence non-musculoskeletal outcomes like mental clarity, energy, and focus. Thankfully, chiropractic case reports and larger studies like the recent New Zealand College of Chiropractic study on the default mode network are beginning to put adequate focus on this significant area of potential.
Mental clarity and chiropractic care
Recent case reports have begun to document changes in mental clarity alongside chiropractic care. Steinberg (2023) described a 63-year-old woman whose balance and mental clarity improved with subluxation-based care. Hawkes (2024) reported a 26-year-old cancer survivor who noticed clearer thinking while receiving care for musculoskeletal pain. A third case documented a 74-year-old patient who experienced sharper mental processing and was able to reconnect with meaningful work and community life after care.
This is in line with emerging research by Haavik et al. (2024), which explores the links between chiropractic care, pain, anxiety, and the brain’s default mode network. This brain network is active during rest and self-reflection and is thought to be involved in memory, mood, and daydreaming. If chiropractic care can positively influence this network, it may change how people experience not just pain, but life itself.
Beyond cognition, research also shows chiropractic adjustments can alter brain–body communication: shortening the cortical silent period, improving muscle drive, and increasing strength while reducing fatigue. In simple terms, adjusting the spine changes how the brain coordinates the body.
The new case: headaches and posture, but mental clarity increases too.
A new addition to this growing body of work is that of a 30-year-old IT professional and long-distance runner presented with a main complaint of recurring headaches. The case, recently published in the Asia Pacific Chiropractic Journal, detailed how the patient described his headaches as a tight band across the head with blurred vision and light sensitivity. His posture showed significant forward head carriage and early cervical kyphosis, confirmed by EOS imaging. He also reported neck pain and fatigue.
Chiropractic care was delivered using the Advanced Biostructural Correction (ABC™) method, which addressed meningeal tension, spinal subluxations, and lower limb mechanics. Alongside care, he was advised on simple ergonomic changes to his workstation and sleep setup. His exercise routine was not altered. While the original case report contains full details of the subluxation findings, along with subjective and objective measures pre and post chiropractic care, it is the difference it made to the patient’s energy, pain, mental clarity and overall function that really sings.
By just four weeks under care, posture assessments showed reduced forward head carriage and improved spinal alignment. The patient reported a 90% reduction in headaches, better sleep, higher energy, and a clearer mind. By ten weeks, his headaches were gone, his posture had normalised, and his running performance had improved significantly. He later completed the Sydney Marathon pain-free and began training for an 80km ultramarathon.
But a novel finding in his case was an improvement in energy and mental clarity. He initially remarked to his chiropractor that his symptoms were affecting every area of his life, and he worried about how he would cope if he and his wife were to have a family in the future. Over the course of care, his confidence, energy levels, and mental clarity had all shown significant improvement. While energy and mental clarity were not a part of his presenting complaints, the improvement was remarkable enough for the patient to recognise it and raise it as an impactful by-product of care. His sense of well-being was much higher than it had been at the beginning of care, and this was something that he described as life-changing.
Why this matters
What we find as chiropractors when measuring subluxations, posture, and other findings in our examinations and follow-up exams might excite us, but it is the impact on the person that truly matters. Research simply backs up what we see, and allows us to communicate it with more authority. Of course, case report data doesn’t give us the ability to generalise findings to a whole community, but it does show us where larger studies might look, and it does show us the difference chiropractic made in one life.
This case highlights the close relationship between posture, spinal biomechanics, subluxation and quality of life. While headache relief was the presenting complaint, the broader benefits—improved energy, mental clarity, sleep, and performance—were equally significant. These outcomes back up the growing evidence that chiropractic care may have an impact that extends far beyond pain relief.
As the evidence base grows, chiropractic is increasingly being recognised for its role not only in managing musculoskeletal conditions, but also in supporting overall human performance and wellbeing. This case adds weight to the idea that improving posture and spinal function can have far-reaching effects—on how people think, feel, and live.
