The relationship between foot pronation and structural short legs is to investigated, with a corresponding analysis of the distribution of weight bearing.

A sample of twenty five subjects with suspected true short legs will be selected as determined by a structural analysis and Alli’s test. Conformation of true short legs will be made via AP pelvic, or slit aperture femoral head x-rays of patients standing in a “calcaneal neutral” position.

Subsequent exposures will be taken of the pelvis / femoral heads with the subject in a relaxed calcaneal stance. Relative pronation will be determined by protractor measurement of the angle made by the horizontal and  a line bisecting the posterior aspect of the calcaneous.

The weight bearing distribution of subjects in a normal stance will be observed via the use of bilateral scales.

It is hoped that analyses of resultant figures will reveal any relationships of leg length inequality, foot pronation and weight bearing, as a broad spectrum of leg length inequalities will be used.
