Professional surfers subject themselves to much physical abuse. Traumatic injuries to professional surfers has been documented in the past (Lowden B.J. et al., 1983., Barry s.w.,  et al, 1982.)  although ongoing physical complaints common to many surfers has had little representation in the literature.

This paper investigates the anatomical structure of a population of professional surfboard riders and surveys them on the symptomatic areas in which they are chronically aware of. The relationship between the structure of an individual’s thoracic spine and the action of surfboard paddling will be the prime aim of this paper.

Data will be obtained from a surf contest site under the supervision of the contest chiropractor. Co-investigators will screen the subject’s thoracic spine with the use of a pantogram to record the external curvature to paper. Subjects will be asked to complete a questionnaire pertaining to their  relevant  history. Significant results will be discussed with emphasis upon causal factors and with mention of possible preventative and maintenance care for dysfunctional areas of the surfers body.
