An observational study is to be conducted to investigate how chiropractic care may improve the pain and the temperament of developmentally disabled children. The observation is to be conducted over a three month period during which the musculoskeletal disorders of 20 developmentally disabled will be assessed and monitored by a chiropractor. The temperament of the child will be assessed and monitored by the primary care provider and/or the parents of the child.
The children aged between 10 and 15 will be chosen from special schools such as the Kingsdene Special School, Telopea, The Spastic Centre, Allambie Heights. The children chosen will be moderately to severely disabled with temperamental difficulties.
Each child will undergo a full chiropractic examination, which includes a structural analysis, various forms of palpation, orthopaedic techniques and a full set of spinal radiographs. The children will then undergo a three month course of chiropractic treatment involving chiropractic spinal manipulation The chiropractic technique will be left to the discretion of the chiropractor. Correspondingly the temperament of the child will be assessed on a weekly basis.
