The reliability and repeatability of Derefield Thompson leg length checks has been investigated previously. A significant correlation between X-ray measurement of anatomical short leg, and prone checks with the legs fully extended, and also when flexed, was reported, however, only on the left side. We will investigate this finding further.
We will also do further research into the use of another leg length test commonly used by chiropractors . Alli’s test is used to reveal specific shortening of the femur or tibia, and checks will be. done using this test, and also compared with X-rays demonstrating femoral head heights.
Forty patients will be checked using Derefield and Alli’s tests by 10 practitioners.
To further investigate Alli’s test we will have a number of patients examined using Alli’s test and compare results with X-rays of the entire lower limb. Ten patients will be examined by 2 practitioners in this further study.
